Welcome to England Design!
England Design is the web home of Cynthia England, an internationally known quilting instructor and quilt pattern designer. Cynthia is most well-known for her Picture Pieced quilts. Cynthia's most recognized quilt, Piece and Quiet, was chosen as one of the "The Twentieth Century's Best American Quilts" in 2000.

In addition to this award, Cynthia won Best of Show at the International Quilt Festival in Houston for Piece and Quiet in 1993 and for Open Season in 2000. Grist Mill Picture Piecing pattern


The Grist Mill quilt design was inspired by the Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock State Park in West Virginia. The image at the top of this page shows a larger view of the Grist Mill quilt.

Cynthia's Piece and Quiet quilt is featured on the cover of the current $100,000 Quilting Challenge magazine.

 

The latest issue of $100,000 Quilting Challenge magazine, (#3) features Cynthia's quilt Piece and Quiet on the cover and an article by her entitled "Getting the Most Out of Your Stash".

Grist Mill, shown below left, is one of two recent patterns in Cynthia's Small Landscapes Series and is also featured in the article.

Jane Hall's - The Expert's Guide to Foundation Piecing includes a project by Cynthia England.

Picture Piecing Patterns and Books
Through England Design, Cynthia has published over 50 patterns and two books. You'll find all Cynthia's currently available books and patterns on the Patterns and Books page. Her book Picture Piecing: Creating Dramatic Pictorial Quilts (shown below left), provides step-by-step details of her picture piecing design and construction technique. It has sold over 20,000 copies.

The book includes full color pictures of many of Cynthia's quilts and shows numerous examples of quilts created by other quilters who have used her picture piecing techniques.

Fabric Packets
For almost every pattern in her line, Cynthia has put together a Fabric Kit with just the right types and quantities of fabrics to duplicate the sample quilt for the pattern. You'll find these fabric kits are offered right on the same page as each pattern. In addition, England Design offers over 50 Fat Quarter Packets which feature 4 fat quarters each. These fabric packets feature great fabrics for pictorial quilts

Cynthia and the England Design staff enjoy seeing photographs of the quilts that Cynthia's students and customers have created using her picture piecing patterns and books. We invite all Cynthia's students and customers to submit photos of their creations to our Student and Customer Showcase which includes examples of quilts made using either England Design patterns or using techniques learned from Cynthia's workshops or Picture Piecing book.
