Cynthia England's
Free "Engine" Block Pattern

BEFORE YOU PRINT!

When you print the pattern, be sure to use "Fine" rather than "Draft" printing mode, if your printer has that option. Also, use the Page Setup option in Netscape or Internet Explorer to make your margins as small as possible so the entire 8" x 8" design can fit on one sheet of paper. (By the way, we seem to get better results printing from Internet Explorer if you have that option.) For some systems, problems can be avoided by setting your printer to print in Landscape mode. See the information below for additional suggestions in case the printout doesn't turn out to be 8" x 8"

We have given you an 8 inch block pattern so that it will be interchangeable with the other 8 inch blocks in the Baby's Favorite pattern book - however, printing a full 8" wide block is difficult on some printers due to the required left and right side margins. In addition, it is difficult to predict exactly what size this pattern will print due to variations in browsers and printers.

Luckily, we don't expect you to really have much of a problem with this pattern. From our experience, the most likely printing problem will be that the entire 8" block can't fit on one sheet of printer paper and a bit of the right side gets cut off. Compare your printout to the screen image, it is possible that all you have to do to complete the pattern is to extend the horizontal pattern lines until the block is 8" (or until it is equal to whatever size the height of the block printed.)

If this happens, and your block is at least, 7 1/2" to 8", just extend the two horizontal seams (that go all the way to the right edge of the block) until the block pattern measures 8 inches by 8 inches.

On the other hand, if your block prints smaller than 7 1/2", you should take it to a copy center and have it enlarged to 8" because the engine block will look better with the other blocks (and the smallest pieces will be manageable).

Finally, on some computer/printer combos, the pattern doesn't print exactly square. If this happens, increase or decrease the height of the top section (labeled G) until the height of the block equals the width of the block, then take the pattern to a copying machine and enlarge or reduce the block as required to get an 8" block.

We give you permission (for your personal use only) to have the copy center enlarge/reduce the block to 8" as needed.

Macintosh users please note-
If this pattern prints too big on your Macintosh, you have two options:
1) In Netscape, look under File - Page Setup for an option print the entire page on one sheet if possible. (This might be possible on Internet Explorer also.)
2) Drop our webmaster an email (at the email address below) requesting to be notified when we get a Macintosh version of the pattern posted. She's working on it, but hasn't perfected it yet.

Open the Engine pattern.

Here's another option: if you don't get good results printing the image above, you can try downloading our Adobe Acrobat Pdf version of the pattern. You'll need to have at least Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01 to view and print this file. You may already have it on your computer, as many software packages come with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have it, Adobe makes Acrobat Reader available free via download at their site. Just click the Acrobat Reader icon below to go to that site.
